Move It Along (version 1)
| This one almost made it on the record in a form near to this.
But, I changed my mind at the last minute. I almost went to mix with this kind of approach, but
I felt that it was a little stiff. I found myself tweaking it constantly - not a good sign.
I wanted the feel of guys playing, for real, rather than this "everyone overdub to a perfect drum loop" kind of production.
I do like the vocal approach - kind of Marvin Gaye-ish with vocals in octaves. And Will Lee on bass is superbad. And the girls! Tabitha Fair and Keri Noble.
But, sometimes you gotta lose stuff along the way, so I went back in to re-cut it to get the feel I wanted. Really glad I did. Aaah, there will always
be this demo! |
Even Deeper (demo)
| Gary and I made this one in a couple writing sessions. Collaborations, if they go well,
usually take two days per song for me. And this is the demo at the end of day 2. I really love it! Love the jazz chords. Pretty proud of my bass playing on this.
Like the vocal. The problem is, I somehow lost the entire
file. One day during the record, I was about to try the lead vocal again, and discovered that I'd lost this whole track! Vanished into magnetic heaven.
Super bummed. We did it again for the record, and it came out great, but there's something cool about this that we never quite got the same.
We did end up getting a cool drum track from Rich Mercurio, and a fantastic Will Lee bass track on the final. So, here's one that got away.

Outta The Red (day 1)
| This was my demo that was written and recorded in a couple hours. Drum beat, wurli and a guitar overdub, and it sounds complete.
Sometimes you go absolutely nuts with parts. This one is so simple, reminding me all over again... (KISS!) And, write about what you know!!!
|
Never Give Up (demo)
| This is what gave the rhythm section before going into the studio to cut the record version of this song.
I wanted to convey to them the feeling I wanted. I just recorded myself singing and playing piano to a beat over and over
until I got a whole performance. That's something I learned making this record; get yourself to the point where you can sing the whole
song well, and then you are getting close to a "final" vocal. Punching in line by line is for amateurs! I'm not saying that all my vocals are one take, but they're all based on
parts of whole performances.
